Comic Dane Cook plays Philips Arena

Actor and comedian Dane Cook brought his Global Thermo Comedy Tour to Philips Arena Saturday night.

Cook, writes the AJC's Rodney Ho, is one of the most divisive stand-up comics in the business.

He fills arenas, has 2.5 million fans on MySpace, a million Facebook friends and 700,000 followers on Twitter.

Yet his detractors, writes Ho, find his physical and observational humor distinctly unfunny.

The 37-year-old Boston native was, in many ways, the first big-time comic to build his career thanks to the Web.

"Ten years ago," he said, "I was jazzed if I could reach 100 people on AOL Instant Messenger. Now I can reach 5 million people with one click. It's overwhelming."

After a string of not-so-well-received acting roles in films ("Employee of the Month," anybody?), Cook has refocused on his most successful venue of standup.

"What people think of me is none of my business," Dane says. "My fans are there and have been there for 19 years. That's what matters."

Comic Robert Kelly was one of the opening acts Saturday night.

Al Del Bene was the other.
