PROTESTERS ARRESTS--February 2, 2016 Atlanta: Colin Rainey-Slavick, a student at Bard College, was one of eight protesters arrested at Georgia State University when they refused to leave a protest Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 over a Georgia Supreme Court decision rejecting lower tuition for immigrants without legal status. Police identified the protesters as Pedro Castillo-Pastor, Edgar Barrios-Ortiz, Colin Rainey-Slavick, Brenda Gonzales-Castro, Melanie Rivas-Triana, Luisa Stainback, Angie Itzell Delarca and Arizbet Sanchez-Guiterrez. The protesters had occupied the first floor of Centennial Hall since Monday, students and university officials said. Georgia State spokeswoman Andrea Jones said university police asked the protesters to vacate the building Tuesday, and most of them left. "The eight arrested refused to leave," she said in a statement. "Police said the protesters had been disruptive earlier this morning, and they were concerned about possible disruption in the building at the start of the university's workday." Carlton Mullis, the deputy chief of police at Georgia State, said police intended to let students continue their sit-in Monday. "But overnight, at about 1:30 or 2 o'clock, they tried to surge the elevator to go upstairs, which we're not going to allow," Mullis said. CAR IN CREEK--FEBRUARY 3, 2016 DECATUR DeKalb County Fire Rescue firefighters performed a swift water rescue after a motorist left the roadway and ended up in Fowler Branch Wednesday, February 3, 2016. DCFR Capt. Eric Jackson said the southbound vehicle left the roadway and was swept into the swift moving waters of the creek, swollen by early morning rains. "By the time the vehicle got approximately 300 feet down the stream, the car overturned with someone in it," Jackson said. "That person either got out or was pushed out and went downstream another 150 to 200 yards where they landed on a creek bed." Jackson said about 8 firefighters performed a swift water rescue of the female occupant and brought her to safety. Initially, authorities said there were only two victims. An investigating trooper found out there was a third person in the vehicle after notifying the family about the deaths. "[Layla's mother] asked about her daughter, " Lataucha Harris, a relative of the family, told Channel 2 Action News. "Originally, they didn't know there was three people in the car. So they had to go back and look for her." Relatives told Channel 2 that police found Layla nearly 12 hours after the deadly police chase and crash. The family said the wanted answers. On-again off-again showers early Wednesday evolved into a downpour that trapped cars on flooded roads and led one driver and her vehicle to be swept into a DeKalb County stream. Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said up to 1 foot of moving water flooded Northside Drive, after heavy rain and gusty winds moved into metro Atlanta early. Heavy rain and strong wind also knocked down trees and caused outages in the metro. Georgia Power reported more than 80 active outages, impacting more than 4,00 customers at one point Wednesday morning. And meteorologists warned of several weather advisories. A flash flood watch is in effect through Thursday morning for much of metro Atlanta southward, Channel 2 Action News Karen Minton meteorologist said. MARTA BILL INTRODUCED--Feb. 1, 2016 - Atlanta - State Sen. Brandon Beach (left), conferring with Sen. Michael Williams, on Monday introduced legislation that could double MARTA's footprint in metro Atlanta and transform transit service for the region. If the law passes, voters in DeKalb and Fulton will be asked whether they're willing to pay an additional half-penny for MARTA, bringing their MARTA sales tax to 1.5 percent. In return, those residents would get expansions of the rail line up Ga. 400 North to Alpharetta, east along I-20 to the Mall at Stonecrest, and a light-rail line through the busy Emory CDC area with connection points at Lindbergh and Avondale. ROAD FLOODING--February 3, 2016 Atlanta: Metropolitan Parkway at Perkerson Road was so heavily flooded, cars couldn't move on the southwest Atlanta roadway Wednesday morning, Feb. 3, 2016. Mike Forest, who was trapped in his 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, said he took the Metropolitan route to dodge traffic and ended up ankle-deep in water. He said sewage problems in the area are not uncommon and that he hopes the City of Atlanta will finally prioritize them as well as repairs to his now inoperable car. MORRIS BROWN BUILDING BURNS--February 1, 2016 Atlanta: Firefighters exit from the upper floors at an apartment fire near the new Falcons stadium that blocked Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. west of Northside Drive Monday morning, Feb. 1, 2016. The fire happened on the second floor of an abandoned 10-story building, and there were vagrants inside, Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Sean Johnson said. "We were able to get the fire extinguished and get everybody evacuated," Johnson said. No one was injured. The building, named John A. Middleton Complex, is located at 550 Mitchell St. SW and was formerly the west dorm of Morris Brown College. The fire started when an item caught fire in one room of the building, Johnson said. He added this is the time of year when homeless people are trying to keep warm and that probably played a part in the fire. This is not the first fire on the Morris Brown's campus. An earlier one happened last August. That fire, in the 140-year-old and then-vacant Gaines Hall dormitory, led fire officials to conclude the structure should be torn down because it poses a safety hazard to pedestrians and drivers in the Northside Drive area. At the time, Invest Atlanta, the city's economic development agency and owner of the building, said it would need to do a full assessment of the damage before it is razed. JOHN SPINK /JSPINK@AJC.COM
