January 17, 2017 Atlanta: One of the dogs were cornered by police at Thurgood Street. A child was killed early Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 in a pit bull attack on the way to school, and the owner of the dogs was arrested, Atlanta police said. The child, a 5- or 6-year-old boy who attended F.L. Stanton Elementary School, was walking to a bus stop with a group of children in the 1200 block of Gideons Drive in southwest Atlanta when he was mauled, police and school officials said. A girl, also 5 or 6 years old and a Stanton student, was found unconscious and taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with serious injuries. Three dogs and other children were involved in the deadly attack, authorities said. Those children were cornered by the pit bull until a neighbor scared the dog away. They were not injured. "We're still trying to evaluate to figure out what really happened," Pickard said. The boy and the girl were taken to Egleston, Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said. The boy was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital's trauma unit, where he died. The girl is in stable condition, Willis Green said. The other children tried to help their friends. January 17, 2017 Coweta County: The GBI and other agencies are on the scene of a deadly shootout between deputies and an armed man near the Fayette-Coweta county line Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, 2017. The man was killed during the gun battle on Collinsworth and Goodlin roads, authorities said. The incident started when deputies responded to a Coweta County 911 call of a stolen car that hit a guardrail about 10 p.m. on I-85 Monday. ÒThe subject exited the stolen car and left the area before Coweta deputies could locate him,Ó GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. The man was then involved in a home invasion in Tyrone, which is near the crash site, Miles said. ÒThe subject was confronted by the homeowner and the homeowner shot at the subject,Ó Miles said. Deputies learned of the home invasion through a 911 call, according to Channel 2 Action News. By the time Fayette County deputies caught up to the man, he had stolen the homeowner's vehicle and was speeding away, leading deputies to chase the man.Ê Authorities set up a roadblock in the area, and the man later wrecked the vehicle, Miles said.Ê ÒThe subject exited the vehicle with a weapon and shot at officers,Ó Miles said. ÒThe officers returned fire and the subject died as a result of his injuries.Ó No deputies were injured during the incident. January 18, 2017 Atlanta: A memorial was placed overnight into Wednesday morning, Jan. 18, 20178 on Jasper Street near where a boy was killed and a girl was injured early Tuesday in aÊpit bull attack on their way to school, Atlanta policeÊsaid. Logan Braatz and Syari Sanders, students at F.L. Stanton Elementary School, were walking to a bus stop in the 1200 block of Gideons Drive in southwest Atlanta when they were mauled, police and school officials said. While the Fulton County Medical ExaminerÕs office has not officially identified the children, relatives of the victims released names and photos to Channel 2 Action News. They were taken to ChildrenÕs Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with serious injuries. Logan, 6, wasÊlater taken to Grady Memorial HospitalÕs trauma unit, where he died.ÊSyariÊwas still at Egleston in stable condition, Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said. SyariÕs family told Channel 2 she is alert and conscious.ÊÒWeÕre still trying to evaluate to figure out what really happened,Ó Atlanta police Sgt. Warren Pickard said.
