The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has cleared the DeKalb school district from its probationary status saying the threat to its accreditation is no longer eminent. However, Elgart, the SACS chief, says the district is still under watch and they are now under something called accreditation warning. Gov. FLIGHT WEATHER--Jan. 21, 2014 Atlanta: A plane lands at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 as Atlantans will need to check on their flights if they’re traveling up the east coast while winter weather will play havoc on travelers. The mercury is expected to plunge into the teens by early Wednesday. Atlanta’s low early Wednesday will be around 17 degrees according to Channel 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton, with afternoon temperatures topping out around 37. The cold temperatures will continue through Friday, with highs in the upper 30s Thursday and mid-30s Friday, and morning lows in the mid-20s Thursday and around 17 degrees Friday. Saturday should be a little warmer, with temperatures climbing in the upper 40s after beginning the day around 23 degrees. Atlanta’s high Monday of 69 was 17 degrees above normal for the date. ATLANTA TEMPERATURE DROP--Jan. 22, 2014 Atlanta : The sign at 141 Piedmont Avenue at Georgia State University displays the temperature at 7:45 am. The Arctic blast that pushed a few snow flurries through metro Atlanta Tuesday afternoon sent temperatures plummeting into the teens early Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 and forecasters said the bitter cold will last through the end of the week. Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said temperatures will be slow to rebound from the latest round of polar air, not climbing into the 40s until Saturday. Minton predicted upper 30s Thursday and mid-30s Friday, with lows in the low 20s early Thursday and mid-teens Friday morning. Check today's full weather report and track changes. The weekend should be sunny and warmer, Minton said, with highs around 47 Saturday and 50 Sunday. Weekend lows will be in the low 20s early Saturday and mid-20s Sunday, Minton said. Atlanta's official low early Wednesday of 16 degrees was 18 degrees below normal but 6 degrees above the record low for the date of 10, set in 1961. SWAT STANDOFF IN GWINNETT--Jan. 22, 2014 Loganville: A Loganville SWAT standoff ended without injuries and one person is in custody, authorities said. Gwinnett County sheriff's deputies serving an eviction notice Wednesday morning, Jan. 22, 2014 were met with gunfire, spokeswoman Deputy Shannon Volkodav said. "Upon arrival, they announced themselves and someone inside the home began firing," Volkodav said. Shortly before 10 a.m., a sheriff's office SWAT team was called to a home in the 1800 block of Mountain Park Run, where Volkodav said a man armed with a rifle held authorities at bay. "Two shots were fired from inside the home," Volkodav said. About eight homes in in the Haynes Creek subdivision were evacuated as a precaution, authorities said. Others were urged to remain in their homes, said Cleon Vaughn, who lives in the neighborhood. "It was crazy," Vaughn told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "They shut down the whole neighborhood." The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Kelvin Gourick, surrendered to authorities just before noon, she said. Gourick was taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

All of metro Atlanta is under a wind chill advisory for dangerously low sub-zero wind chills through 10 a.m. Friday along and north of a line from LaGrange to Gainesville, is calling for wind chills as low as -10 degrees. Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said lows by early Friday will be around 12 degrees in the city, and highs Friday will only be around the freezing mark. Minton’s forecast for the weekend calls for sunny skies and warmer afternoon temperatures. Saturday’s morning lows around 20 will be followed by highs in the upper 40s, and on Sunday, the mercury should reach the low 50s after starting out in the upper 20s. Temperatures across metro Atlanta at 6 a.m. Thursday ranged from 19 in Peachtree City, 21 in Marietta and 22 in Dunwoody to 25 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
