A FLIGHT BACK IN TIME--022713 ATLANTA: It's a flight back in time for WWII veteran Rudolph Phillips, 91, Woodstock, who gathers his thoughts on board the movie "Memphis Belle", a restored WWII B-17 "flying fortress" bomber celebrating the 70th anniversary of it's historic last mission over Peachtree DeKalb Airport on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, in Atlanta. Phillips was a gunnery instructor during the war and said "when they dropped the bomb I was in California crewing up to go over to the Pacific. I haven't been on a B-17 since." Phillips said every time he sees a plane he thinks about the men who didn't come back and that he wished he was still in as good a shape as he was back then. The DeKalb County school board held what may be their last meeting as currently constituted as Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to announce his reaction to a recommendation to suspend two-thirds of the nine-member board at at press conference at 2:30 Monday afternoon. A federal judge decreed Sunday that any action taken by Deal, except suspension, would be enjoined pending a Friday, March 1 court hearing. Deal can suspend this board but cannot appoint replacements. That likely means the DeKalb school board will not have a quorum to meet for at least the rest of the week. KENT D. PAIN AT THE PUMP CONTINUES--February 25, 2013 Atlanta: Gas prices at the Chevron gas station at 10th and Spring streets in Atlanta on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 were $3.99 as prices continue to go in the wrong direction for consumers. Atlantans were paying an average of $3.79 a gallon for gasoline early Monday, an increase of nearly a dime since a week ago and 67 cents more than the mid-December price. The current national average price is $3.78, and the national average for the month of $3.63 is the highest ever for the month of February, according to AAA. The average has surpassed $4 a gallon in four states, "and a couple others are only a few cents shy of reaching the $4 mark," said Jessica Brady, a spokeswoman for AAA. "Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there will be much relief at the pump in the next couple of weeks," Brady said. "U.S. refinery maintenance typically peaks in March, meaning we could see more cuts in refinery output, leading to higher gas prices." A website that tracks local prices, atlantagasprices.com, reported early Monday that metro prices ranged from $3.60 at a Marathon station at Trickum and Shallowford roads in Cobb County to $4.19 at a Chevron on Cobb Parkway. TREE FALLS ON TRUCK--February 26, 2013 Rockdale County: Rockdale emergency workers surround a Toyota Tacoma where a man died Tuesday, Feb 26, 2013 on westbound I-20 just west of Sigman Road in Rockdale County. The combination of heavy overnight rain and strong, gusty winds brought trees down across metro Atlanta early Tuesday, including one that toppled onto a pickup truck on I-20 in Rockdale County, killing a motorist. According to Rockdale sheriff’s Investigator Michael Camp, a 1998 Toyota Tacoma was westbound on I-20 just past Sigman Road about 6:20 a.m. “when a large tree fell from the side of the interstate, landing on the cab of the truck and entrapping the driver.” Camp said the 60-year-old man driving the truck died at the scene. His name was being withheld until relatives could be notified. “After the initial accident, several other vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident attempting to avoid hitting the truck and the tree, which was blocking the interstate,” Camp told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an e-mail. “The accident is still under investigation, but the tree being downed by the rain and wind is believed to be the main cause,” Camp said. STUDENT SHOT, JAILED--February 27, 2013 Atlanta: Police investigate on the 10th Street side of the school parking lot. A 17-year-old female student at Grady High School suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg Wednesday morning, Feb. 27, 2013 in what police called an accidental shooting. The incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. located near the intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive. The student accidentally shot herself in the thigh, police spokesman Carlos Campos said. The gun belonged to the girl, said Campos. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, he said. Campos said police had recovered the gun. Parents were allowed to come and check their children out of school for the day, and about two dozen had done so by late morning. Atlanta School Superintendent Errol Davis said at a news conference that the girl arrived at school late and was let into the gym by fellow students. She did not pass through any metal detectors, Davis said. He said the incident occurred after the student left the gym. She was later jailed on multiple charges including Carrying Weapons within a School Safety Zone, Possession of a Pistol by a Minor and Reckless Conduct. JOHN SPINK / JSPINK@AJC.COM
