Swedish carmaker Volvo is making a shocking promise: No driver will die in a new Volvo vehicle after the 2020 model line hits the road. "If you meet Swedish engineers, they're pretty genuine," said Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars North America, in a CNN interview. "They don't say things when they don't believe in it." Kerssemakers said the pledge does not cover those intent on killing themselves. "Deathproof" cars may not be as farfetched as it sounds. In 2015, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety said nine 2011 models commonly seen on U.S. streets had had zero driver deaths, including the Volvo XC90 4WD pictured here. Car safety has improved greatly in recent years, with new safety technologies, such as forward collision warning, playing a huge role. Volvo said safety will improve as autonomous cars, with features such as adaptive cruise control, auto lane keeping assist, collision avoidance, become common. Following are eight more cars that had zero driver deaths in the last report compiled by the IIHS.
