Gwinnett County police are investigating Thursday morning after a woman was hit and killed on Buford Highway near Duluth.

All southbound lanes of Buford Highway were closed at North Berkeley Lake Road before 6:30 a.m. and remained shut down until 8:15 a.m., when the scene was cleared.

Gwinnett police confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution a woman walking in the area was hit by a vehicle and killed. Authorities recovered a body from a ravine about 15 yards from the road.

The case is being handled by the police department’s accident unit and is not a criminal investigation, according to police spokesman Cpl. Ryan Winderweedle.

No details about the deadly incident, including the victim’s name, were released.

Another pedestrian death shut down a busy road in DeKalb County on Wednesday morning. All lanes of Covington Highway were closed at South Indian Creek Drive for more than two hours after the wreck was reported around 5 a.m.
