The traffic jams will continue this weekend with roadwork across the metro area, weather permitting. As before, the Perimeter promises drivers the most aggravation, with serious lane closures littered across the top end of I-285.

Really, the state traffic mavens would prefer everyone avoid that slice of highway. And you will be happier if you can avoid it. One pinch point there will back up traffic for long distances. The I-285 project has several.

If you find yourself there anyway, here are some tips:

WHAT

The Georgia Department of Transportation is repaving the northwestern section of I-285, between Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County and Ashford Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County.

AT WHAT COST

The project should ring up at $56 million.

TROUBLE SPOTS

DOT’s alert lists a dozen lane and ramp closures, with some ramps completely closed and some places on the highway pinched by closure of three right lanes. That includes the eastbound ramp to Ga. 400, and eastbound and westbound ramps closed at I-75.

INFORM YOURSELF

To get more details, check Georgia-Navigator.com or call 511. In general, do yourself a favor and look at the color-coded highway congestion maps online. There will be red.

WHEN

Construction can go from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. The official completion date is August, 2013.

FOR SURE?

Rain can cancel roadwork plans, but this weekend’s forecast looks gorgeous, according to Channel 2 Action News Severe Weather Team 2.
