A sheriff in Ohio, tired of "dealing with (Mexico's) criminals," saw fit to send a letter to Mexican officials asking for a $900,000 repayment for 10 years of jail expenses for illegal immigrants, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
“I think it only fair that you provide me with some financial support for dealing with your criminals,” said Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones in the letter obtained by the Enquirer.
He told Mexican President Enrique Nieto in the request that he reviewed jail records over the last decade and determined more than 3,000 Mexican nationals were arrested in his county and housed in the jail for an average of five days each at $60 a day in taxpayer dollars.
Rough math led to the $900,000 bill, submitted through the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C.
“This cost number absolutely skyrockets if you were to factor in the man-hour costs of all the investigations conducted before making arrests, the costs of actual prosecution through our local courts and all the other various social services costs that Butler County taxpayers provide to your former residents,” Jones said in the letter.
Jones, known for a strong stance on immigration reform — Fox News reported he previously wrote letters to President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush — has tried this approach before, according to the paper. His 2010 attempt got no response.
