Rubel, Elise

June 6, 2021

RUBEL, Elise Schiff Elise Schiff Rubel was born in 1923, in Brooklyn, to delighted parents who had given up all hope of having a child. With bright blue eyes and Shirley Temple curls, the darling of a network of banker and distiller German Jews of whom she remained immensely proud. Attended high school at Erasmus Hall and went on to Brooklyn College. At 16 met her first husband, Warren Weil. Married him at age 20 as a war-time bride. Supported her husband through medical school and residency at Harvard. Moved to Birmingham, AL in the early 50's where she raised 3 children, Margery Mayer (Larchmont, NY), Dr. Craig Weil (Atlanta, GA) and Laura Weil (New York City and Orient, NY). Divorced in 1960. Became the breadwinner for her family as secretary and librarian of the Birmingham Bar. Met her wonderful second husband Irving Rubel in 1963 and was very happily married until his death in 2008. Elise lived out her life at the Piedmont in Buckhead supported by her son Craig and his wife Amy Levin Weil.

These simple words cannot convey the true Elise. Know that she was a stunner her whole life. That she had great style. That she was sharp as a tack and fully engaged with life even at 97. That she was a reader and conversationalist. That she had heart and courage. That she was a dedicated Democrat and liberal thinker. That she was fun and loved to travel. That she took tremendous joy in her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. That she started out as one of a kind and lived her life that way, right up to the very end.

Elise is survived by her devoted children, her beloved grandchildren Lily Roscoe, Henry Mayer and Alea Weil, and by her great-grandchildren, Teddy, Walter, Nate and Ambrose Roscoe and Alise Weil.
