HANSEN, Edwin Lewis "Lew"
Edwin Lewis Hansen died on Saturday, October 21st at the age of 93. Born in Philadelphia, PA of parents Edwin Lewis and Helen Reigner Hansen, the family moved to Fredericksburg, VA when Lew was 6 years old. He grew up there and after high school graduation from James Monroe High School, went for a year of post-graduate study to Mercersburg Academy in PA. He then enrolled at the University of Virginia and played varsity football for four years. He was a member of the Raven Society, Eli Banana and the IMP Society and lived on the Lawn his 4th year as a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Later he was on the Board of Managers and was President of the Alumni Association. Lew became a "Double Hoo" by attending law school there, once he completed service in the Army. His military service included graduating from Engineer OCS at Ft. Belvoir, VA, the Airborne and Ranger Schools at Fort Benning, GA, and the rest of his time at Ft. Bragg NC with the 82nd Airborne. He made 42 jumps! After law school, Lew moved to Atlanta, GA to intern with Judge Durwood Pye and stayed to practice law with the firm Candler, Cox, Andrews and Hansen and later with Hurt, Richardson. He and Anne Ellison were married in 1960 and in their first few years did a lot of traveling as Anne worked for Delta Air Lines. They have three children: Barbara Baez (Estanislao), Edwin Lewis Hansen (Kelly), and John Hansen (Lydia); plus 8 grandchildren. Their travelling continued, including frequent visits to their favorite place in London. Lew was a member of the Commerce Club, the downtown Kiwanis Club, the Breakfast Club and Leadership Atlanta as well as serving as an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church. He also served at Atlanta Law School as both a teacher and trustee for many years. After retirement in 1996 Lew was an active volunteer in the community including as a host for the Olympics in Atlanta. In 2014 the couple moved to Lenbrook retirement community where they have been active in the excursions, outings and activities and have made many new friends. The family will hold a private ceremony at Trinity Presbyterian Church, and a memorial service at Lenbrook on November 18 at 11:00 AM.
