A 31-year-old Newnan man is facing federal charges that he fraudulently used the identities of Mexican nationals to obtain more than $700,000 in refunds from dozens of bogus tax returns.

Damian Alarcon-Morales was indicted by a federal grand jury last week and has been arraigned on the charges.

According to prosecutors, Alarcon-Morales on Sept. 15 was found to be in possession of federal income tax returns, Internal Revenue Correspondence, Mexican identification documents and handwritten notes linking him to over 200 individuals, most of them Mexican nationals, and at least 175 fraudulent tax returns filed between 2011 and 2014.

In most cases, the Mexican identification documents were used to obtain Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, which are assigned to foreign nationals and others not eligible for Social Security Numbers, but who are required to file federal tax returns, prosecutors said.
