One suspect is dead after a traffic stop ended in an officer-involved shooting outside of Chattanooga on Monday morning.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department said the shooting happened after a deputy conducted a traffic stop about 2 a.m. Monday on Crestview Drive in Sale Creek, which is a community outside of Chattanooga, according to WDEF. At some point during the stop, the deputy and the suspect got into an altercation. The deputy fired his weapon at the suspect, fatally shooting the individual. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area of the shooting, Crestview Drive and Daugherty Ferry Road, had been blocked off most of Monday morning.

Another suspect fled the scene, which led to a chase into Sequatchie County. That suspect was taken in custody.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved in the shooting was not hurt. He is under investigation and on administrative leave, which is standard after an officer-involved shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation of the incident at the direction of Hamilton County District Attorney Neal Pinkston’s office.
