An Ohio state trooper's 4-year-old son is dead after the boy accidentally shot himself with his father's gun, authorities said.
According to the Lucas County Coroner's Office, Evan Sun found the unsecured gun inside his family's Toledo home Sunday morning and accidentally shot himself in the face. He later died at a nearby hospital.
The gun was a "back-up" weapon used by the boy's father, Ohio State Trooper Fu Sun, WTVG reported. The Ohio State Patrol is investigating the "division-issued" firearm, according to The Associated Press.
"The Patrol family is deeply saddened by the devastating loss of Trooper Sun's child," patrol Superintendent Richard S. Fambro said in a statement to WTVG. "There are no words to describe such a loss. Our thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be, with Trooper Sun, his family, friends and co-workers."
Toledo police are leading the shooting investigation, Fox News reported.
