An Ohio state trooper's 4-year-old son is dead after the boy accidentally shot himself with his father's gun, authorities said.

According to the Lucas County Coroner's Office, Evan Sun found the unsecured gun inside his family's Toledo home Sunday morning and accidentally shot himself in the face. He later died at a nearby hospital.

The gun was a "back-up" weapon used by the boy's father, Ohio State Trooper Fu Sun, WTVG reported. The Ohio State Patrol is investigating the "division-issued" firearm, according to The Associated Press.
