According to KOAT, the girl was struck in the head about 3 p.m. Tuesday when someone in another vehicle opened fire on the car she and her parents were traveling in on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque. The suspect then drove away, police said.
The girl's parents, who were not injured, pulled over until help arrived.

"The dad explained there was some type of road rage incident," Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik told KOB. "A car pulled up beside them and started firing rounds into the car."

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died, according to The Associated Press.

Police are still searching for the suspect. Officers told KOB that witnesses have provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, but some of their accounts conflict.

"This should have never happened. This is a complete disrespect of human life," Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden said.

"It's 100 percent preventable. It did not have to happen, and we need to rise up as a community and say enough is enough."

Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call 1-505-242-COPS or 1-505-843-STOP.
