A 5-year-old girl was killed by a leaping sturgeon as she was boating with her family Thursday on the Suwanee River in Florida.
Jayln Rippy died in the accident. Her mother Tanya Faye and brother Trevor were injured and both will need facial surgery, according to WTSP.
The family has set up a Gofundme account to help pay for funeral costs.
This is the first fatal sturgeon strike this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Four other boaters have been injured.
