A 6-year-old girl was dragged nearly a mile by a school bus in Forsyth County, WGHP reported.
The accident was reported at 3:43 p.m. Monday.
Chelsea Klepzig, 6, a first-grader at Union Cross Elementary School, was dragged down Pine Meadow Drive in Forsyth County, North Carolina by her school bus. Klepzig's grandmother, Estrella Klepzig, said she was waiting for the girl to get off the bus when the bus driver closed the bus on her arm.
Estrella Klepzig told WGHP that she followed the school bus, flashing her lights at the driver.
The girl hung onto the bus with her arm stuck in the door for almost a mile. Her parents told WGHP that her feet and legs were dragged as she held on. When the bus reached the next stop, her grandmother said the doors opened and Chelsea Klepzig fell to the ground.
She suffered minor injuries.
There were 17 students on the bus at the time, Theo Helm, chief of staff at Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools told WGHP.
The bus driver was a substitute employed by the school system since 2000, Helm said. He was immediately suspended without pay and resigned a short time later.
No charges have been filed, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, which said that the incident is still under investigation.
