11-year-old boy dies after jumping into creek to save sister

Hospital officials said an 11-year-old boy who jumped into a North Carolina creek Thursday night to save his sister has died.

Officials at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte said Randez Brown passed away late Thursday night.

Emergency crews rushed the boy and his 7-year-old sister, Samyah Brown, to CMC Thursday night after they pulled them from a creek in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The brother and sister were in a tunnel when the girl slipped into the creek -- where it is up to 10 feet deep, according to emergency crews.

Officials said Randez jumped into the creek in an attempt to save her.

Police said the girl remained in critical condition in the ICU at CMC Friday morning.

A third person from the scene was also taken to the hospital.

Their condition was not known.

An official with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said Samyah is a second-grader and Randez was a fifth-grader at Sedgefield Elementary School. There will be grief counselors at the school Friday.
