An 11-year-old boy was bitten by a shark off the coast of North Carolina Saturday, according to officials.

The boy was attacked while surfing at Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach around 2:30 p.m., WCTI reported. He suffered deep wounds to his left foot. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to WCTI.

The beach has not been closed and the size of the shark was undetermined, officials said.

The attack was the second confrontation between a swimmer and shark on North Carolina beaches in recent weeks. A shark bit an 18-year-old man as he was swimming at Atlantic Beach on June 11.
