A Utah woman says her daughter is being racially profiled because of her hairstyle. Caycee Cunningham, who is white, wears her hair in dreadlocks. The eighth-grader began wearing the style after a trip to Guatemala. She claims to wear it as part of her spiritual journey in the Hindu religion. Caycee says the style represents her “turning over a new leaf” to find herself.

The school wants Caycee to stop wearing the style, saying it’s against the dress code, which calls for a “neat, combed appearance” with no distracting hairstyles. The principal says Caycee is not facing repercussions, but he is hoping to talk with her mother, Tonya Judd, to work something out.

Judd tells FOX 13, "My daughter is white and there happens to be other kids in the school who happen to be other race and ethnicity and they have hair that can't be combed, and there's never been an issue regarding that before."

She believes her daughter should be allowed to wear her hair how she wants as well.

Caycee says she’ll change schools but not her hair.
