Authorities say an employee of a Texas recycling center was crushed to death when a 1-ton bale of trash fell on her.

The incident happened early Thursday morning at Republic Waste Services in Fort Worth when a stack of three bales became unsteady and toppled over, The Dallas Morning News reported, citing Fort Worth police.

One bale fell on 31-year-old Renisha Mitchell, killing her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Officials with Republic Waste Services issued the following statement: "It is with great sadness for the entire Republic Services family that we learned early this morning that one of our employees will not be making it back home safely to her family. We are mourning the loss of our friend and coworker, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her children and loved ones. Republic is fully cooperating with the local authorities, and any additional media inquiries should be directed accordingly. Thank you."
