William Barr, President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, will face senators’ questions this week at his confirmation hearing.

Barr, the man chosen to replace retired Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will certainly  face questioning over a memo he wrote to the Justice Department in June in which he questioned the reach of special counsel Robert Mueller's obstruction of justice inquiry into Trump's activites shortly after he took office.

Barr is also likely to be asked about an op-ed piece he wrote that appeared in The Washington Post on the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

In his prepared statements to the committee, released in advance of the hearing, Barr said he supports Mueller’s work and believes Mueller’s investigation should be completed.

"I believe it is in the best interest of everyone — the President, Congress, and most important, the American people — that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Counsel to complete his work," Barr is expected to say during the hearing.

“The country needs a credible resolution of these issues. If confirmed, I will not permit partisan politics, personal interests, or other improper consideration to interfere with this or any other investigation.”

Barr also said he believes the results of Mueller's investigation should be released to the public.

If he is confirmed, it will be the second time Barr will serve as attorney general. President George H.W. Bush nominated Barr for the position in 1991. Barr served as attorney general for two years, from 1991 to 1993.
