A Connecticut man spent a dollar bill by accident and then got the same bill back five years later. But it wasn't just any bill: It was signed by his late wife.
Peter Bilello, who was working in America, was back home in southern Sicily when his mother questioned her unmarried son, asking when he was getting married.
His mother suggested a neighbor's daughter, and when he looked at Grace Caruso, he liked what he saw. So did she.
They moved to Hartford, where they had two children and four grandchildren.
They marked their love on $1 bills.
He signed one, she signed the other, and they kept one another's dollars in their wallets.
But five years ago, Peter accidentally spent the bill that his wife had signed.
Peter lost Grace to breast cancer last year, five months after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Seven months later, he made a miraculous discovery when he took his granddaughter to get sandwiches at Subway and looked at the $3 that he received in change.
The dollar with "Grace B." written on the front mended his broken heart.
Visits to her gravesite are now more comforting for Peter, who believes that Grace sent her dollar back to him.
You might be wondering what happened to the dollar bill that Peter signed. He wonders, too, and has no idea where it went.
