1. He was listed on University's website as an assistant professor of U.S. History, WLBT reported.
2. Schmidt was a member of the American Historical Association.
3. He earned his doctorate at the University of Kansas and his Bachelor's and Master degrees at Emporia State University, according to the historical association's biography on Schmidt.
4. Schmidt had a love of history at an early age. Both of his parents took part in historic preservation. His father collected Civil War and other 19th century memorabilia from Kansas. He originally only minored in history, but then realized he was only six hours short of a major he declared a dual major of history and political science.
5. He told the American Historical Association that he valued "the fact that inquiry for the sake of inquiry is honored by the profession. We never accept conventional wisdom or current paradigm as an acceptable answer. To be a historian (and a practitioner in any other humanities field for that matter) is to grapple with the very core of what it is that makes us human."
Schmidt was found dead in his office in Jobe Hall on the Delta State University campus, WHBQ reported.
Police are searching for Dr. Shannon Lamb as a person of interest, WLOX reported.
