In a tension-filled press conference, Keith Summey, North Charleston’s mayor, announced that Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager has been fired, in addition to being charged with murder for shooting Walter Lamer Scott in the back multiple times.

Police Chief Eddie Driggers said he was “sickened” by what he saw when watching the video of the incident.

The mayor announced that body cameras are to be worn by every officer on the force.

In the disturbing video that has quickly gone viral, Slager, who is white, is seen briefly struggling with Scott, who is black. As Scott breaks free and starts to run, Slager lifts his gun and shoots several times in his direction.

Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident began with a routine traffic stop. It is suspected that Scott tried to run because he owed child support and had warrants out for his arrest.

Mayor Summey also revealed that Slager’s wife is eight months pregnant.

About 75 protesters from Black Lives Matter chanted during the conference, saying “no justice, no peace” and “eight shots in the back.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
