Donald Trump's campaign announced Monday that Corey Lewandowski, the campaign manager, is leaving his post.
Lewandowski's departure has sparked speculation over whether it was infighting that lead to his leaving so close to the Republican National Convention.
Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said Monday that "Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign," and that the campaign apprreciated his "hard work and dedication," and wished him the best."
“The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”
Here’s a look at what other media outlets are saying about Lewandowski’s departure.
It was a ‘long planned adjustment’
“Donald J. Trump is parting ways with his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, a move that comes as the presumptive Republican nominee faces challenges as he moves toward the general election. … Mr. Trump had faced increasing concerns from allies and donors, as well as his children, about the next phase of the campaign as he pivots toward a general election. … One person briefed on the moves, who asked not to be identified, said the campaign had long planned adjustments to the needs of a general election campaign.”
Lewandowski was onboard from the first
“Campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has left Donald Trump's organization. …Trump, who has been slipping in polls in recent weeks in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, was scheduled to meet with aides Monday about future campaign plans. Serving as campaign manager from the outset of Trump's campaign, Lewandowski helped engineer the businessman's unprecedented run toward the Republican presidential nomination. He was spotted at the presumptive nominee's side during last week's nationwide tour.”
He clashed with Paul Manafort
“Corey Lewandowski is no longer with Donald Trump's campaign, the presumptive Republican nominee's team announced Monday. … Lewandowski, who had worked for Trump's campaign since it launched last June, had clashed with campaign chairman Paul Manafort. “It’s a total cage fight in there now,” an operative close to the campaign told POLITICO last month. “Manafort tried to take out Corey, but he didn’t succeed. And now, everywhere Corey looks, he sees a threat, so he’s trying to neutralize those threats.” ”
Rough patch for the campaign
“Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is leaving the campaign, just weeks before the Republican convention where Trump is set to claim the GOP presidential nomination. …It's unclear what specifically led to the shake-up. The high-profile departure of one of Trump's most senior and loyal advisers follows what was widely seen as a rough patch for the campaign.”

Lewandowski departure began in early April
“The departure of Corey Lewandowski from the Trump campaign began, in retrospect, in early April, when Trump hired Paul Manafort, 67, a longtime political fixer, to sort out his delegates woes. At the time it appeared that Manafort’s main job might be to drive home the nomination for Trump even if the candidate fell short of a delegate majority. Texas senator Ted Cruz had succeeded in installing sympathetic delegates in states such as Louisiana that Trump had won cleanly, frustrating the Trump campaign.”
Trump met with campaign advisers Monday
“Donald Trump’s presidential campaign announced the departure of Corey Lewandowski as campaign manager, spokeswoman Hope Hicks said. Lewandowski, a longtime Trump loyalist, had sparred with some of the new people Trump had brought in on the campaign, mainly Paul Manafort, who Trump brought on as a top strategist. The move comes as Trump huddles with his campaign advisers Monday to reassess strategy after another difficult week in the campaign, and amid criticism from many Republicans of Trump’s campaign.”
