A large whale was caught on camera swimming toward, then beneath, a group of surfers sitting on their boards, oblivious to the large mammal, on Monday in Southern California.

High school senior Payton Landaas, 18, took the footage with a drone, NBC News reported.

"It was completely surreal and so insane," Landaas, who frequently films along the ocean, told NBC News.

While one of the surfers swam off when the whale’s tail surfaced, the rest of the group seems unfazed.
