A touchdown scored at North Stanly High School last Friday was something special.

It didn't win the game. It didn't set a school record, but it touched the hearts of everyone who witnessed it.

Every day, Daryl Colon comes out to football practice at North Stanly High School.

He straps on his shoulder pads and his helmet knowing he won't use them, but he may be the most important member of the team.

"It's a blessing to see someone with his condition to come out and practice with us," said senior defensive tackle Dee Bennett.

Colon suffers from cerebral palsy.

"He'll come out of the locker room smiling go back in smiling. If you're having a bad day, he'll cheer you up," said senior center Dalton Johnson.

Colon may be an inspiration to his teammates, but he gets more out of being a part of the team than anyone on the practice field.

"That's the only thing I got that keeps me going," he said.

Every day he runs gassers, does bear crawls and up-downs, begging for a chance to play.

"They told me I could not play, but I didn't listen and I played anyway," Colon said.

"Why?" WSOC-TV sports anchor Phil Orban asked.

"Because nobody can stop me from playing football," Colon said.

In the regular season finale, Colon lined up at running back, took the hand-off around the left end and ran 85 yards for the touchdown.

"It felt like it was the greatest moment in the world for me," he said.

"All you could do was smile, and you were crying at the same time. It was just a great moment," said senior linebacker Nick Chandler.

Colon said that moment was a blur, so Orban asked his head coach what he would want Colon to remember and hold on to.

"The football," he answered.

"He walked around at school all day long with that football. I just want him to remember that he had his day on the football field," said head coach Ralph Jackson. "Just go out there and do what you want to do. Don't let anyone stop you."
