U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Cline was sent overseas on a 10-month deployment.

As a result, Cline’s wife Stephanie and 8-year-old son Ayden moved from San Diego to Conover to be closer to family while he was gone. The deployment was hard on Ayden, his mother said. He had to say goodbye to his father for 10 months, move away from his friends and start at a new school.

On Friday, Matthew Cline returned home and was waiting in Ayden’s classroom at Shuford Elementary School to surprise him.

“It’s long time coming,” Cline said. “Dreaming of this day for months and it’s finally here.”

The two kept in touch through phone calls, email, Facebook and Skype, which the second-grader admits just isn't the same.

“I mean, I liked it, but it didn't feel like the real thing,” Ayden said. “I mean, I just wanted to see him here.”

Now the two have plans to play video games, go to the beach, and just hang out on the couch and watch TV.
