An Uber ride in Newport Beach, Calif., turned violent Friday night when an unruly passenger got pepper-sprayed.

Uber driver Edward Caban said the passenger was was "incredibly intoxicated" and was fading in and out of consciousness along the ride, NBC Los Angeles reports. The passenger did not give Caban an address, so after struggling to get him to his location, Caban said he decided to drop him off at a well-lit shopping center parking lot and that's when the man began to attack Caban, NBC Los Angeles reports.

"He was grabbing my head and was trying to smash it against the window," he said.

Caban said he was done driving for the service.

The passenger, 32-year-old Benjamin Golden, was caught on the dash cam video in Caban’s car knocking the Caban’s head into the window. Caban told NBC Los Angeles that he was able to get to his pepper spray and use it on Golden before police arrived.

"I wanted to make sure he didn't get away," Caban said. "I have lost so much money on people like him and I'm done dealing with it."

Golden was arrested on public intoxication and assault charges with Uber telling NBC Los Angeles that he is banned from the service.

Despite Uber offering to reimburse him for pepper spray cleaning, Caban said his days as an Uber driver are over. "I don't feel safe driving for Uber anymore," Caban told NBC Los Angeles.
