Newly released video shows a scary gun battle as an Oregon State Trooper pulls over a military veteran.
"Comes out with one hand behind his back. The trooper repeatedly asks him to get back in the car and this is what Allen does. He started opening fire and then he drove away." (Via WTVR)
The shootout happened in late August about 100 miles east of Portland as a trooper pulled over 34-year-old John Van Allen, II.
Allen shot the trooper in his left side as patrol car dash cam captured everything. Investigators say the trooper returned fire hitting Allen in the chest. (Via WRCB)
“I told you you were speeding.”
The Oregonian published the raw video Thursday after filing a public records request. This comes two weeks after prosecutors determined the trooper's use of lethal force justified. (Via The Oregonian)
Troopers found Allen half a mile farther down the road dead from his bullet wound. They say his three children, ages 10 to 15, were in the car unharmed. (Via KATU)
Family members told The Oregonian Allen was returning to his home state of South Carolina at the time, and the former U.S. Army Reserve engineer’s aggressive actions were out of character.
