An undocumented immigrant is heading to an Ivy League university next fall.

Laura Veira is a recent valedictorian from Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, Connecticut, and will begin this fall at Harvard University in Cambridge.

Veira announced she is an undocumented immigrant during her graduation speech.

She said the support she received when she went public with her immigration status was unexpected.

"I was surprised by the immediate reaction, because everyone was cheering, It made me like more confident in continuing my speech, knowing that I had that support,” she said.

Viera said she worked hard, knowing it was the only way for her to gain financial aid, and she is no longer ashamed of being an immigrant.
