Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace said the first victim was a girl.  Some reports say she is 12, others say 13.  She lost part of her arm and may lose her left leg, The Associated Press reported.

One witness told AP, "It was so much like a scene from Jaws," referring to the 1975 movie about a man-eating great white shark.

The water in that area was evacuated after the attack.

Less than 90 minutes later, a 16-year-old boy was also attacked, about two miles away from the first one, according to AP.

The boy lost his left arm.

Officials are not sure if the same shark was responsible for the attacks.

Both victims are listed in fair condition. Their names have not been released.

NBC News reports that the beaches have reopened, but vacationers were encouraged to stay out of the water.  The Brunswick County Sheriff's Department will patrol the coastline by helicopter looking for sharks.
