Trader Joe's is recalling packages of raw walnuts because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause illness and sometimes death in young children, the frail or the elderly, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday.
The company said the recalled walnuts were distributed in Trader Joe’s stores nationwide.

The potential for contamination was discovered through routine testing by an outside company contracted by the FDA. To date, Trader Joe's has not received any complaints of illness related to the recalled products. For a list of UPC codes and "best by" dates affected by the recall, go to traderjoes.com.
Healthy people who contract Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, it can cause an infection in the bloodstream.
Customers who have purchased any of the recalled walnut products should throw the products away or return them to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers with questions can contact Trader Joe’s customer relations at (626) 599-3817.
