The man, whose story is now a major motion picture, is being honored for being an, what Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said, American hero.
Abbott told Fox News that Kyle had "the guts to stand up and defend this country," so Monday he declared Feb. 2 as "Chris Kyle Day."
Kyle served four tours in Iraq as a Navy SEAL, and is considered the deadliest sniper with the most confirmed kills in American military history, according to ABC News.
Kyle had left the military in 2009 and wrote the book "American Sniper," which the blockbuster with Bradley Cooper is based on.
He was working with wounded veterans and spent some time with them at a shooting range as part of rehabilitation work ABC News reported.
Kyle and a friend were killed at a Texas gun range in 2013 by Eddie Ray Routh, a former Marine who claims to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, Fox News reported.
His trial is scheduled to begin next week.
