The shooting happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cole Village Apartments in Winston-Salem.

Officials said when officers arrived at the apartment complex, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to the head. The child's mother, father and 3-year-old sister also were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, but they were uninjured.

First responders took the wounded child to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for emergency surgery, but he later died from his injuries, authorities said.

Witnesses told police they saw several men in a silver car driving through the complex, randomly firing shots from the vehicle.

Police said there is no evidence that indicates the family was intentionally targeted. Three apartments and an unoccupied car were hit by bullets, according to Winston-Salem police.

Authorities said they were able to find the suspects at a nearby apartment and arrested three teenagers, ages 14, 15 and 17.

All three teenagers are in jail under no bond.
