A teenager who thought he hit a deer that night that a mother of four was struck and killed in Cherryhill Township turned himself into police Friday, but he’s not facing any charges, police said.
Leslie Bennett, 45, was walking along Route 553 the night of Sept. 6 when she was hit and killed. The driver that struck her never stopped, according to authorities.
Her daughter, Alissa Bennett, spoke with Channel 11 shortly after the hit-and-run.
“For someone to know you hit my mom and never even tried to stop or break, I don't understand that,” she said.
Alissa Bennett pleaded for the driver to turn him or herself in.
“I couldn't imagine a person who knew they took someone’s mom. She’s not a mom just to us. She’s a mom to every kid who came through this house. She’s a mom to foster children,” she said.
Channel 11 learned Tuesday that a 19-year-old man turned himself into state police. His attorney spoke on his behalf, stating that the teen was driving his father’s red Ford F-150 in the area at the time of the crash, but said he thought he struck a deer.
The attorney said the teen repaired the truck, which suffered some front-end damage, and a few days later, the truck caught on fire. The attorney said the fire was accidental and possibly electrical in nature.
At this time, the teenager has not been charged. However, police confirmed they have filed for a search warrant to examine the remains of the truck.
