A man wading off the coast of Florida found what appeared to be a hand grenade Wednesday afternoon, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
The man found the suspected grenade while in the water near the Port Charlotte Beach Complex on Harbor Boulevard around 12:15 p.m., deputies said. He contacted authorities who evacuated the area while removing the object.
The Southwest Florida Regional Bomb Squad Disposal Unit responded to the scene and took the item away for disposal.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the item,” the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said. “There was no threat of injury to anyone present at that time.”
