A faulty engine part used in certain Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, Ascent and Impreza models can lead to a sudden loss of power and cause a crash, which has prompted a recall of the vehicles.
The positive crankcase ventilation valve can deteriorate and engine oil can get into other components, causing a sudden loss of power while driving, according to the manufacturer.
Subaru is recalling about 250,000 vehicles because of the defect, according to Consumer Reports. Dealers will inspect and replace the faulty part at no charge. If the parts have disintegrated and can't be found, dealers will replace the vehicle's engine.
Subaru is contacting affected owners. Vehicle owners can also search their vehicle identification number on the federal highway safety website.
