Students at a New Jersey high school basketball game have come under fire for wearing costumes that critics are calling racist.

According to the Washington Post, the controversy began Feb. 18 at a game between Holy Spirit High School and Atlantic City High School in Atlantic City. Two Holy Spirit students performing in a skit on the sidelines wore monkey and banana costumes. The skit also involved students dressed as a cowgirl and bumblebee, Philadelphia's WCAU reports.

The majority of Atlantic City's team is African-American, according to WCAU.

"I absolutely think it was offensive," Ricardo Belgrave told WCAU. "You should know when you're putting that costume on, it should come in your mind that this might offend African-American people."

League and Holy Spirit officials condemned the skit. Holy Spirit athletic director Jay Connell told the Press of Atlantic City that the students have been warned but will not be punished.

“I am not going to kick anyone out of school or whip anybody," Connell said. "All I can do is apologize; I can’t take it back."
