A beached whale and its calf were euthanized Sunday morning in Neptune Beach, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Karen Parker, with the FWC, said the agency received calls about the whales stranded on the shore from residents and the Neptune Beach Police Department Sunday morning.

Biologists, law enforcement and volunteers were on the scene working to aid the whales. FWC officials said the whales do not do live well in captivity and were euthanized by researchers due to safety concerns.

The mother may have been “compromised” or sick, according to FWC officials.

There were reports of a shark injuring the whale, but FWC cannot confirm that at this time.

An autopsy will be performed on the whales at a facility in Buck Island.
