Information on the type of pit vipers was not released. That family of snakes includes rattlesnakes and copperheads.

Officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement said improperly declared items are common, but usually they are counterfeit sports jerseys and other items, not snakes.

Officials said more snakes were found at the home to which the box was addressed, but could not say what the person intended to do with the animals if they had been delivered alive. The investigation is continuing, and charges from the fish and wildlife service could be pending, The Times reported.
