NBC News is reporting exclusively that the plagiarized sections of Melania Trump's speech Monday night at the Republican National Convention were added after a professional speechwriter submitted his draft.
Less than an hour after GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's wife left the stage in Cleveland on the first night of the convention, it emerged she had given a speech that lifted sentences verbatim from an address Michelle Obama delivered to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.
According to NBC News, the Trump campaign hired speechwriter Matthew Scully to draft Melania Trump's address. But NBC said it obtained a copy of the draft Scully submitted, and it did not contain the paragraphs plagiarized from the first lady's 2008 speech.
Earlier Monday, Mrs. Trump told NBC's Matt Lauer that she had written the speech herself with little help. Trump's campaign chairman said Tuesday that no plagiarism had occurred, and that "the words that she used were personal to her."
