At least six people died after a gunman opened fire at three separate locations in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Saturday.
Here's what we know:
'Strong suspect' in custody
Around 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Michigan State Police stopped a black Chevrolet HHR that matched the gunman's vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot of a bar. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeffrey Getting said at a news conference Sunday it was not clear whether the suspect had been in the bar before police stopped him.
Authorities arrested Jason Brian Dalton, 45, of Kalamazoo, and booked him into Kalamazoo County Jail around 4:40 a.m. Sunday. Dalton has no known prior criminal history.
Upon his arrest, Dalton "seemed pretty even-tempered," Getting said. He did not struggle or fight with authorities.
Police gathered a gun and other evidence from the vehicle and later from his home, Getting said. He declined to discuss any details of the evidence but said investigators had obtained surveillance video of the shooting from two of the three scenes.
Dalton, an Uber driver, was reportedly "driving very erratically" shortly before the shooting spree began. A Facebook user posted a photo of a man named Jason that appears to be Dalton with a caption saying the driver reached speeds up to 80 mph but maintained a calm composure while doing so. Frightened passengers called 911 to report the behavior, "but surprisingly they didn't seem all that concerned."
Uber released a statement saying the company "reached out to the police to help with their investigation."
Six killed in three separate shootings, including father and son
By Sunday morning, police said six of the shooting victims had died. At least two remained hospitalized.
Michigan State Police released the names Sunday of four victims killed in a Cracker Barrel parking lot. Mary Lou Nye, 62; Mary Jo Nye, 60; Dorothy Brown, 74; and Barbara Hawthorne, 68.
According to investigators, Dalton walked up to a Chevrolet Cruze in the parking lot and started firing at the four people inside the vehicle including Mary Jo Nye, Brown and Hawthorne. Mary Lou Nye, the driver of a mini-van parked nearby, was also shot and killed, according to officials.
According to WWMT, the assailant killed four people in two separate vehicles at a Cracker Barrel restaurant off Interstate 94. Authorities initially said another victim, a 14-year-old girl, had also been killed, but recanted their statement when the teenager, who was being kept on life support at a hospital so her organs could be donated, squeezed her mother's hand. She is in critical condition.
Authorities believe Dalton first struck at Meadows Townhomes in Kalamazoo around 6 p.m., severely injuring one woman.
Two more people died at another shooting reported at Seelye Kia of Kalamazoo. One other person was injured in the attack. Tyler Smith, 17, and his father Richard were identified as the victims, according to the Detroit Free Press. The father and son were targeted at the Kia dealership, according to WOOD. They appeared to be looking at vehicles after hours and both died of their injuries, according to the television station.
All three shootings happened in parking lots, according to officials.
Shootings appear to be random
Authorities did not immediately have any possible motive for the shootings.
“We've had several shootings here tonight... They all appear to be related,” Matyas told WOOD. “In summary, what it looks like is we have somebody just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks.”
Shootings appear to be premeditated
Authorities believe the time taken between the three shootings indicates the assaults were premeditated.
"These weren't sudden explosions," Getting said.
