His parents, Heather Lyn Odom, 30, and Jeremy Jermaine Barrett, 34, of Aberdeen, were both arrested and charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

Odom and Barrett appeared in court for a bond hearing Sunday afternoon, WRAL reports.

Odom told the judge that she and Barrett had been in another room of the suite when the shooting happened.

"I just wanted to say that this was just a tragic accident, and it's something that shouldn't have happened, but it did," Odom told Municipal Judge Clifford Welsh.

The couple is released from custody and expected back in court in September.
