KXTV reports Melvin Hayes was getting his car washed because he was getting ready to pick up a priest to take him to his wife's funeral.

Inside, Hayes said a woman approached him and struck up a conversation with him. The woman then allegedly was able to get Hayes' keys from an attendant at the car wash and drive off with his car.

Workers reportedly told Hayes they thought the woman was his girlfriend and mistakenly gave her the keys. And his wife's funeral service had to be cancelled since the ashes were gone.

Hayes says he doesn't care much about getting the car back — he told KCRA getting his wife's ashes back is his top priority.

HAYES: "I am so concerned that those ashes will get thrown away some place. I cannot conceive my wife not having a proper burial."

The Sacramento Bee reports the suspect is being described as a short, heavy-set woman in her 40s. The 2011 Ford Fusion she's accused of stealing has California license plates that read 6ROC306.

Hayes and his wife would have celebrated their 49th anniversary in January. As of Friday morning, local outlets say police haven't made any arrests in the case.
