A Pennsylvania man is facing an attempted homicide charge after authorities say he beat his girlfriend with multiple objects, including a chest freezer, after she didn’t give him a cigarette.

Police responded to a Charleroi home early Wednesday morning as a woman ran out of the house screaming, “He is inside, and he is killing her,” according to the police report.

Authorities later identified the man as Terry Newton who was charged with attempted homicide after he allegedly brutally attacked his girlfriend on her birthday in front of other women and children.

“From what she said, they got into a verbal argument. He asked her for a cigarette,” Charleroi Police Chief Eric Porter said.

The police chief said the woman said, “No,” and Newton attacked her, picking up a chest freezer and repeatedly hitting her in the head with it. Authorities said he also hit her with a dehumidifier and repeatedly kicked her in the head.

“She had a pretty significant head injury. (It’s) one of the main reasons they flew her,” Porter said.

Police said while his girlfriend was unconscious, Newton ran from the home.

Officers chased him and caught him a few blocks away.

WPXI learned Newton was charged with attempted murder in the past.

“He had a violent assault at a bar here a few years ago. (He’s been) arrested by numerous departments in the valley,” Porter said.

Investigators said Newton sliced a man’s throat from ear to ear, but the victim refused to testify.

Newton was arraigned Wednesday afternoon and was being held on $1 million straight cash bond.

His girlfriend was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition.
