When Officer Michael Kotsonis was called to a New Hampshire store for a shoplifting case, no one thought it would end the way it did.

Kotsonis found out that the woman was accused of taking items to bake her child a birthday cake, Sea Coast Online reported.

Instead of arresting the woman, Kotsonis paid the tab for the cake mix, Crisco and frosting.

The 19-year veteran of the force told Sea Coast Online, "I'm not going to take away a kid's birthday cake. I ended up bringing it back to the mother."

He said that stealing, not for herself, but for her children, didn't make it the right thing to do.

"But the kid shouldn't have to pay," Kotsonis said.

Kotsonis said he and his fellow officers do similar actions "all the time." But he said they don't make a big deal out of it.

"We don't do stuff to brag about it," he said.
