A Florida man police believed was trying to break into cars fatally shot himself Wednesday while fleeing, authorities said.
The incident occurred at 4 a.m. Wednesday in Tampa, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The man, who was found with a fatal wound to his head, has not been identified, the newspaper reported.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers responded to a call about several car break-in attempts. Police observed a man running through yards and hopping fences and gave chase, the Times reported.
Police said the man met up with a ride-share vehicle and rode away. After authorities spotted the vehicle, an officer attempted a traffic stop, the newspaper reported.
The ride-share vehicle stopped and the man fled on foot. An officer chasing the man said she heard a popping noise, and soon found the man on the ground with a bullet wound to his head, the Times reported.
A gun was found under the man's body. He died at the scene, the newspaper reported.
Police said the man appeared to have died of a self-inflicted wound.
