Retired police K-9 Sammy was put to rest Friday at the Huber Heights Animal Hospital.
Lt. Matt Dulaney of Huber Heights Police said the retired K-9 died at 2:30 p.m. at the animal hospital on Brandt Pike.
“Since his retirement February 2014, Sammy has experienced health issues, which have caused him a great deal of pain and discomfort,” Dulaney said in a release.
A procession of police cruisers lined the road outside Huber Heights Animal Hospital on Brandt Pike to honor the retired K-9 as he arrived. Officers from as far as Tipp City, Miami Twp., Dayton, Wilmington and Springfield lined up to show final respect for the K-9 officer.
K-9 Sammy had patrolled with Officer Harlow on the streets of Huber Heights since 2003.
“Sammy will be remembered for his exceptional narcotics detection and K9 friendly demonstrations for local schools and organizations,” Dulaney said.
Prior to being euthanized, two Huber Heights police vehicles escorted Sammy and his handler from the police division to the animal hospital.
